Roasted Chana Dal Chutney /Chutney for idli and dosa

Roasted Chana Dal Chutney is the best chutney for idli and dosa, but you can try this as per your choice also. This chutney is really very easy and tasty. I make this chutney without coconut but believe me after trying this chutney you never miss coconut chutney. No doubt that coconut chutney is also very tasty but if yo don’t have coconut and want to eat coconut chutney then this is the best substitute. So without wasting time let’s start this recipe.


Chana dal – 1 cup

Tomato – 2 nos

Garlic – 10 to 15 cloves

Green chilli – 1

Mstard seeds – ½ tsp

Dry red chilli – 2

Curry leaves – 10-15

Oil – 2 tsp

Salt as per your taste


Heat a pan, add ½ tsp oil and fry the chana dal in low to medium flame. When it becomes light golden brown in colour transfer this into a bowl. Now soak the fried dal with water for 15 minutes. Now again heat the pan add 1 tsp oil, chopped tomato, green chilli and garlic. Fry all these ingredients in medium flame for 5-7 minutes or till tomato becomes soft.  Now let it cool completely.

After 15 minutes grind all the ingredients ( soaked chana dal and fried tomato ). Now it’s the time for tadka. Heat a pan, add oil 1 tsp after oil becomes heat, add mustard seeds, dry red chilli and crurry leaves. Fry them for 12-15 seconds and then add it to the chutney. Mix all the ingredients nicely.
